Everyone wants to get the most for their money. With drink prices rising, this could mean you find yourself opting for a value wine, creating your own cocktail of spirits or ensuring you get as drunk as possible of the fewest high alcohol drinks.

Introducing, drinking through a straw.

It’s classy, it can save your teeth, and it’s a game changer if you want to keep your flawless pout looking good all night. But does it get you more drunk?

It’s classy, it can save your teeth, and it’s a game changer if you want to keep your flawless pout looking good all night. But does it get you more drunk?

University student Matthew Frantz desperately wanted to know, and so in an article appropriately entitled, “Do you get Drunk Faster with a Straw?” Frantz finds out for us, what a guy!

Frantz writes that the straw creates a vacuum, which eliminates all oxygen. “The feeling of intoxication is created in part, because of the lack of oxygen entering us,” Frantz says, “so when we form a vacuum with a straw, we should naturally get more drunk.”

Frantz goes on to say the boiling point of alcohol decreases in the straw vacuum, causing the drinker to inhale alcohol vapor which “gets the alcohol into the bloodstream much faster than normal ingestion via the stomach.”

Ultimately, though Frantz admits that the difference would be so little that “it wouldn’t even be noticeable.” Sadly, it hasn’t worked for him and it probably won’t work for us either. Both the “MythBusters” and the National Institute on Alcoholic Abuse weighed in on the topic and agreed that there is no evidence to support that drinking through a straw actually works.

What gets you drunk is the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream, and a straw (unless it leads directly into your bloodstream) isn’t going to change your absorption rate.

Although, Straws can help people to drink faster and thus, drink more. It’s easier to suck down a vodka orange through a straw and drinking faster means you ingest more alcohol at once, and so the alcohol will then hit you faster.

So in a way, straws can get you drunk faster, but, in the way, a shot with no ice might.
